Careful Words

"A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of"- Luke 6:45 (NIV).

It is truly a wise person who acquires the art of listening; to be slow in responding (James 1:19). Many a lie has been discovered by remaining quiet while the liar spins his polished story. Peter listened as Sapphira lied about the money they received from the property they sold. She told the same lie her husband, Ananias, had told earlier. He was struck down by God, dead and removed, and she followed right behind him. Peter said they hadn't lied to human beings, but to God himself (Acts 5:1-10). Once the art of listening becomes habit, then the focus should be on what comes out of the mouth. Seek to speak words that build others up and give grace to those who hear (Ephesians 4:29). If lying is directed to God and not man, then words filled with grace are spoken to God as well. We must remember that on judgment day we will give an account for every careless word we have spoken (Matthew 12:36).
