"Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody"- 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 (NIV).
A quiet life sounds boring in today's culture. We're always looking for excitement in our lives or planning some Adrenalin pumping activity to make our life more interesting. People feel they can't die without completing their personal 'bucket list' of heart stopping memories or else they've not lived their life to the fullest. Maybe that bucket list would win the respect of outsiders, but most are either momentary glances or no reaction at all. Many people are still searching for the one thing that will give their life that thrill, some meaning for existence, but those who have decided to follow Jesus have that yearning satisfied. The focus is taken off of themselves and placed on leading others, through a quiet life, to fill that void with the love of God the Father. Life eternal with our Heavenly Father is the ultimate bucket list fulfilled.
