On Guard

"Then He said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions"- Luke 12:15 (NIV).

Don't we love to hear people compliment us on our home, clothes, car, job, etc? Have you seen the car sticker that says, "He who dies with the most toys wins!"? I heard a radio talk show host make the comment that our possessions possess us: physically, emotionally and financially. Look at the amount of time and money it takes to maintenance our possessions: cleaning, updating, repairing, protecting. How about the expression of "Keeping up with the Jones?" Now you have the sin of greed and pride clawing at your soul. Each possession steals a part of your life and shackles itself to you. Granted, we need a home, clothes, car, job, etc; however, there's a tipping point when your life consists of an abundance of possessions. How much of your life do you want to invest into your possessions? "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life and have it abundantly" (John 10:10; ESV). Satan steals life away and Jesus gives life abundantly. Be on your guard.
